Influenced by the past and foreign lands, I create functional work with a sculptural bent. Using both hand building and throwing techniques, I leave marks and little imperfections that tell the story of how each piece was created. Through the hand-forged imperfections, a patina emerges, reminiscent of a time long ago when industrial manufacturing was far into the future. Introducing other organic and earth elements, such as wood, leather and metal, as accents and extensions, I aspire to elevate and even celebrate the humble ceramic vessel. While building these forms, I often think of the periods and cultures from which I draw inspiration, and ask myself how their respective owners might have utilized these pieces. Whether used in everyday settings or chosen specifically for a special tradition, I feel a piece of pottery is finally complete once the intimacy of use is attained.
