Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Every year we like to bake with our two girls during the holidays. This year, we tried something new; a gingerbread house from scratch. Let's just say, we are not professional bakers, but we had a lot of fun!
Here are some pictures of our creation. The gingerbread recipe was very tasty, we had enough dough to make a couple of cookies, too. Our royal icing was a little bit thick, which made it difficult to pipe. Next time I will thin it out a little more. The mint candies are from Dollar Tree.
We used a gingerbread recipe from Food.com, you can find it here. Our royal icing recipe can be found here. We downloaded a free gingerbread house template and used that for cutting out our house shapes. There are also lots of great building tips included with this template. Download the template here.
This year we also made sugar cookies. We found a great sugar cookie recipe that does not require refrigerating the dough. This is great when you have eager children who are excited to roll and cut out cookies. :D You can find the recipe here. Do you like a lot of sprinkles, or just a few?
And of course, the cookie recipe I have to make every year is the Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe (found on the bag of Nestle Toll House semi-sweet chips). My mom baked these cookies every year when I was young, and now our family continues the tradition.
We hope you enjoy the recipes. Happy baking, have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
